Harassment by instant loan apps firms: Chinese national among 3 arrested by Telangana police

The Telangana police claimed on Sunday that they had busted a Pune-based contact centre allegedly used for harassing borrowers of online app firms for recovery and detained three persons, including a Chinese woman, as part of their ongoing crackdown on fast app-based lenders. According to authorities, the trio was arrested after a city resident complained that he was hounded by online lending app providers over repayment with a higher rate of interest.

The action comes after four persons were arrested here on Friday, including a Chinese national, for allegedly utilising forceful ways to recover debts from defaulters who had utilised 11 fast loan apps established by them and taken out loans.

Three suicides, including that of a software engineer, have been recorded in Telangana in the last month as a result of harassment by fast money lending app providers, prompting the crackdown.

The Director of the call centre in Pune, his wife, a Chinese national, who is supporting him in running the company operations, as well as an HR Manager, were arrested in the current action, according to Rajakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh M Bhagwat. According to investigators, roughly 650 individuals operate in the contact centre and are taught to call borrowers, their family, and friends using their personal cellphone numbers, demanding repayment plus interest.

According to police, lending organisations used rapid loan applications to offer loans to consumers and charged exorbitant interest and processing fees, among other things, and used contact centres to abuse, harass, and threaten defaulters. They even threaten borrowers by mailing fictitious legal notices to their relatives and family members.

Several complaints have been filed with several police stations around the state alleging that these companies got sensitive data such as contacts and images from customers' mobile phones and used them to slander or blackmail them into repaying their loans.
